About the museum
The Heimatmuseum Nauheim was founded in 1962 and was first housed in the town hall, later in the entrance building of the sports park. In the early 1980s, local residents worked together with the municipality on a new museum concept; in 1986 the Heimat- und Museumsverein Nauheim (local heritage and museum association) was founded and has cared for the municipal museum ever since. After the Old School was converted, the museum has been based at Schulstraße 6 since 1987.
The permanent exhibition shows rural customs, household equipment, and the history of crafts. An Erzgebirge homeland room commemorates expellees from the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains). A focus is the musical instrument department with almost 200 instruments from various eras; it also documents how instruments were made from blank to playable, and recalls the instrument industry built up in Nauheim after World War II. On the first floor there are rooms for temporary exhibitions.
Across from the main building, in an old barn, stands the Remise (outbuilding), which volunteers have been preparing since 1994. There you can see old machines and tools, a historic hearse from 1898, a self-propelled band saw, and a collection of nearly 100 preserved local animals.
