About the museum

Until it was divided in 1627, the museum building on Karlstadt's Hauptstraße formed one large estate together with the neighboring house. Coats of arms inside and outside show that it was at times in noble hands in the early 15th century. Alongside the bishop's district steward (Amtskeller) of Trimberg, bakers, tanners and coopers lived and worked here; the first documented Karlstadt beer is said to have been brewed here as well.

In 1861 the town bought the house as a residence for the royal district judge. After renovation, it handed the building over in 1985 to the Historischer Verein Karlstadt, which set up and runs a town history museum there. The objects come from Karlstadt, its districts and the surrounding area; they are either loans or were collected by association members.

The town history collection is currently being redesigned and is to focus on the founding of the town around 1200 by the Würzburg bishop. A first step was the reopening on May 6, 2022, with the permanent exhibition "Die Karolinger am Main", which combines archaeological finds from the Merovingian and Carolingian periods with the history of the royal estate of Karlburg.
