About the museum
The museum is run by the Film-Photo-Ton Museumsverein in the Huttenschloss in Gemünden am Main, a building from 1711 on the bank of the Fränkische Saale. The association aims to cultivate the culture surrounding film, photography and sound recording and to preserve it for posterity.
Three exhibition areas are devoted to historical techniques: the photo exhibition shows historic cameras, the film exhibition traces the path from “moving pictures” to video, and the sound exhibition presents, among other things, a polyphon from 1900 and an Edison phonograph from 1902. The exhibition rooms are spread over several floors up to the attic, where there is also a Karl May exhibition, a small stage and a cinema with 42 seats. The cinema regularly shows film classics and requested films; the room can also be used for private screenings or lectures.
A museum shop with souvenirs and historic postcards, as well as a café on weekends, complement the visit. A model railway section run by the association recreates the tracks and the old town of Gemünden as it looked around 1940.
