About the museum

The Insulator Museum goes back to the collecting passion of Lohr high-voltage electrician Lothar Vormwald. He received his first insulator as a gift in 1976; after that the collection grew steadily, also through souvenirs from friends and neighbors and donations from the electrical industry.

The exhibition venue is a former tower station on Haaggasse: a rubble-stone building with a pyramid roof and weather vane from 1920, which has been a listed monument since 2000. In 2001 the town had actually wanted to demolish the dilapidated tower. Instead it was renovated with donations and a great deal of the collector's own labor; he furnished the museum largely on his own. On June 20, 2004 it opened as the town's third museum.

On two floors of only about 2.5 by 2.5 meters each, the museum, considered one of the smallest museums in Germany, shows insulators made of porcelain and glass. The pieces range from thimble-sized examples from telecommunications lines to a multi-part insulator string from a 380 kV high-voltage line, and span from around 1900 to the present. Many still bear manufacturer's marks and year of manufacture. In 2016 a small insulator garden with larger objects was added in front of the tower.
