About the museum
Since 1998 the museum has been housed in the historic bathhouse in the Alter Kurpark, which was converted into a cultural center at that time. Some exhibition rooms are still the size of the former bathing cabins. It presents the more than 800-year history of the former imperial village of Soden, which became part of Nassau in 1803 and Prussian in 1866.
The town was shaped economically by its salty mineral springs: first salt extraction, then, from 1701, the spa business, which ended in 2001 with the dissolution of the municipal spa company. Guests included Heinrich Hoffmann, author of Struwwelpeter, Leo Tolstoy, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Pyotr Tchaikovsky.
The rooms cover, among other things, prehistory and early history, salt production in the newly designed Salinenzimmer (salt room), the Kurzimmer (spa room) with Biedermeier furniture, and a Kurgast room for spa guests. A general store from Neuenhain and a room on Altenhain commemorate the districts incorporated in 1977. A multimedia station lets visitors read about the artists who lived and worked in Bad Soden.
