About the museum
Fritz Best was born in Kronberg in 1894, the youngest of four children of a long-established farming family. His talent was noticed early. He trained as a wood sculptor, attended drawing courses at the Frankfurt Kunstgewerbeschule (School of Arts and Crafts) and became a master student at the Städel. He did not belong to the Kronberg painters' colony, but maintained close contacts with its last representatives.
In 1930 he set up his studio in Kronberg, where he lived and worked until his death on June 21, 1980. His main subjects as a sculptor were people and animals, often with a rural connection. He also created the figure on the Schützenbrunnen (shooters' fountain) at the Schirn in the Old Town. A bust of the artist stands on the Fritz-Best-Platz named after him.
Best bequeathed his entire estate to the town of Kronberg, which established a small museum in his house on Talweg with sculptures, drawings and paintings. The will obliges the town to preserve the house as a cultural site. The building is currently being converted and energy-retrofitted at a cost of around €700,000. Besides three apartments, accessible exhibition rooms are to be created. Until then, the artworks are in storage.
