About the museum

The Heimatmuseum Steinbach in the Taunus lies in the basement of the town's bakehouse on Kirchgasse, a restored half-timbered house. It is run by the Verein für Geschichte und Heimatkunde. The permanent exhibition aims to make Steinbach's history visible, connect past and present, and open up places of memory through selected objects.

The starting point is archaeology: finds from the Neolithic period show settlement since about 5000 BC, with further finds from the Hallstatt and Roman periods. A Güterstein from 1687, one of the town's oldest boundary markers, and a boundary stone found in 1988 at the old border with Oberhöchstadt link the displays to the town's history. The most important document is the donation to the Lorsch monastery from 789, in which Steinbach is first mentioned. Also notable is the oldest pictorial view of the town, from a 1622 newspaper report on the Frankfurt fair. Partner towns are presented as well, along with school documents that contrast old and new.

Further areas cover church history, farming and domestic economy, and crafts and their tools. Steinbach only received town rights in 1972.
