About the museum
The Nittenau City Museum on Kirchplatz has existed since 1979 and documents the history of the town on the Regen river and its surroundings. Nittenau is first mentioned in 1007, when the later Emperor Henry II gave the place, with extensive forest holdings, to the newly founded Bishopric of Bamberg. A copy of the charter is on display in the museum.
The town history section features a wooden town model based on the 1832 cadastral sheet, an oil painting of a town view, and a diorama of the Austrian rearguard action against the French in 1809, with original cannonballs. A collection focus is the stoneware of the manufactory in nearby Reichenbach am Regen in the 19th century. The geology section covers fluorspar, lignite and rocks of the southwestern Upper Palatinate.
The folklore section shows festive costumes, a loom, a farmhouse parlor and a fully furnished shoemaker’s workshop. In the fishing section, a 2.20-meter-long wels catfish from the Regen dominates the room; there are also fishing gear, evidence of timber rafting and two aquariums with live fish. The museum also has three historic tower clocks from Nittenau and Fischbach.
