About the museum

On October 4, 1983, 35 interested people founded the association "Heimatmuseum Freilassing e. V." with the aim of setting up a museum in the historically valuable former fire station on Hermann-Ober-Platz. At first the city rented the attic apartment there, which from March 1985 served as an office where exhibits could be handed in.

After the development of Lindenstraße, the vacated Alte Feuerwehrhaus was converted into a museum. On October 1, 1993, it opened provisionally; a few weeks later it was dedicated as the "Stadtmuseum Freilassing". The association furnished the rooms with support from the Bavarian State Office for Monument Protection and later catalogued the holdings with a computer program.

The exhibition tells the story of the young city, which was called Salzburghofen until 1923, in five sections: prehistory and early history, development of the town, the border, railways and the economy. On display are, among other things, the display grave of a young Bajuwarian woman, the role of customs and border police until the end of the customs border with Austria in 1995, and the railway history up to its privatization in 1993. The museum archive on the upper floor holds paintings by Josef Brendle and Hermann Ober and the Höscheler postcard collection with over 10,000 cards.
