About the museum

The museum’s roots go back to 1909, when an antiquities commission called for the collection of historical objects. On May 22, 1932, the Gesellschaft für Heimatkunde (Society for Local Heritage) opened the local heritage museum in the house at Burgplatz 8; its first head was Otto Damerau. In 1952 the museum moved into the castle, the oldest building in town, where it is still housed today.

Since 2012 the permanent exhibitions have been revised and redesigned. In 2016 the ErlebnisREICH opened as the first section, followed in 2018 by the LehrREICH on the town’s more recent history. Across two floors, the displays cover Hoyerswerda’s history from prehistory to the present, including its development into a socialist planned city, the era of the Princess of Teschen in the 18th century, and the culture of the Protestant Sorbs.

The museum is run together with the neighboring zoo. The building also houses a documentation center on the Elsterhorst prisoner-of-war camp in Elsterheide.
