Trachtenausstellung im Trachtenhaus Jatzwauk

Exhibitions on Sorbian costume of the Hoyerswerda region and on indigo block printing (Blaudruck), in the house of the oldest costume tailoring shop in the area.

Opening hours

About the museum

The house in the Hoyerswerda old town is linked to the Jatzwauk family: in 1926 the Sorbian master tailor Johann Jatzwauk became self-employed and ran a workshop for Sorbian folk costumes with a shop. Today the business is run in the fourth generation; the focus is now on costume care, restoration and advice, along with the sale of typical fabrics, braids and ribbons.

Since 1992 a permanent costume exhibition has been on the upper floor, set up by the then Hoyerswerda district and taken over after the district reform by the association for the cultivation of regional culture in the middle Lusatia (Verein zur Pflege der Regionalkultur der mittleren Lausitz). The association is based in the house. The display is built on the extensive holdings from the estate of Anna Jatzwauk, with original festive, churchgoing and everyday costumes of the Protestant Sorbs around Hoyerswerda.

On the first floor, the indigo block-printing cabinet opened in 2006. In the mid-1990s the association had taken over the collection of the Hoyerswerda Blaudruck workshop Nötzold, rescuing it from dispersal. Shown are the making and processing of indigo block printing, over 200 historical and new printing blocks, and large sample cloths. In the neighboring house since 2018 is the costume room "komorka" with a loan collection and a display on the Sorbian wedding.
