About the museum
The post windmill was built in 1707 in Tschausdorf-Plau, east of Guben, in what is now Poland. In 1920 master miller Max Werdin bought it, had it dismantled, transported by rail to Hoyerswerda and rebuilt in Dörgenhausen. Until 1941 he ground grain here as a custom miller for the surrounding villages.
After Werdin's death the mill fell into disrepair; storms damaged the sail cross, and after the end of the war many tools disappeared. In 1953 master miller Max Lorenz acquired the dilapidated mill and restored it from 1959 to 1963 with state support and many helpers. In 1977 it passed into the ownership of the municipality, and around 1990 the roof, stairs, sail stocks, tail pole and parts of the milling mechanism were renewed with grant funding.
Since 1996 the Windmühlenverein Dörgenhausen (windmill association) has looked after the technical monument. Typical of this construction is the buck: the entire mill house hangs rotatably on the main post and was turned into the wind with the tail pole. Surviving features include the millstone set with a natural stone 1.30 m in size and the wooden gearing; the sail stocks are now fitted with “old German doors”.
