About the museum

The local history museum of the Baltic seaside resort of Rerik was founded in 1953. Since July 1997 it has been housed in the old school, one of the oldest buildings in the village. It documents Rerik's development from 1820 onward; numerous objects have been collected over the years.

The collection ranges from an extensive fossil collection, through finds from the megalithic tombs in the surrounding area in the prehistoric and early historical section, to the history of local fishing. Ship models, including the Reriker Wappenschiff (Rerik coat-of-arms ship) in the form of a cog (Kogge), a model of a Zeesenboot (traditional flat-bottomed boat) and bottle ships (Buddelschiffe), recall seafaring. A collection of seabirds, a sea urchin collection and paintings by regional artists complement the holdings.

Photographs and props on the swimwear and bathing customs of earlier times have a humorous effect. In a gallery, the museum regularly shows exhibitions by artists from the region and from across Germany, who usually present their works in person at the opening. The museum director also offers tours of local history and hikes to the megalithic tombs.
