Stadtmuseum Mainburg
Local history museum in the listed boys' school of 1902: hop growing in the Hallertau, local history, folk piety, and the first farmers.
About the museum
The core of the collection was laid in 1912 by the parish candidate Schmid from Pötzmes, who gave his local history objects to the new museum. The museum is run by the town of Mainburg; the museum management works closely with the Landesstelle für die nichtstaatlichen Museen in Bayern (Bavarian state office for non-state museums).
The museum is housed in the former boys' school, which was planned by the architect Johann Baptist Schott and opened on May 1, 1902. Because of the high groundwater, the listed building rests on wooden piles; its two upper floors were converted for the exhibition.
First came the sections on Mainburg's city history and hop growing, which show everyday objects in the context of their use. Later, areas on the fossil finds from Sandelzhausen, on the Mainburg-born painter Johann Georg Scharf, who worked in London, and on the world of belief were added, and in 2022 also a presentation on the Neolithic settlers at the Auhof.
The Hop Museum in the attic is considered the only one of its kind in Lower Bavaria. Since autumn 2026 the second floor has been under renovation; a new exhibition on city history is to be created there in the future.
