PIRATEN! Auf hoher See mit Playmobil

Family exhibition with Playmobil scenes and busy hidden-object pictures featuring pirate ships and treasure islands, with a search game and further historical Playmobil worlds.

About the museum

The foundation of the collection was laid in the 1980s by the Schwäbischer Heimatbund, which gathered cultural artifacts and everyday objects that were disappearing. In 1995 the town of Nürtingen used it to open its town museum in the Schießhaus (former shooting house) on Wörthstraße, a building dating from 1565. The museum also serves as the town’s archive of objects, and its collection continues to grow through purchases, donations and gifts.

The permanent exhibition spans two and a half floors and traces how Nürtingen developed from a town of craftsmen into an industrial town. Several times a year, special exhibitions round out the program – sometimes on events and figures from the town’s history, such as the hospital founded in 1526 or Elisabeth of Brandenburg of the House of Hohenzollern, sometimes aimed specifically at families with toys, LEGO or Playmobil. Talks, conversations with eyewitnesses and themed tours complete the offering.

The museum also includes the permanent exhibition on Friedrich Hölderlin, which used to be housed in the Schießhaus. Since April 2023 it has been on view in the converted Hölderlinhaus on the Schlossberg, where the Hölderlin-Gok family lived for about two decades from 1774 and which later served as a school for a long time. The multimedia exhibition “Möcht’ ich ein Komet sein?” follows Hölderlin’s educational path between Nürtingen, Tübingen and his positions as a private tutor; in 2024 it won recognition from the Art Directors Club and a Red Dot Award.
