About the museum

Embroidery shaped Wolfschlugen from the mid-19th century into the early 20th century. In 1853 the town set up its first training course for embroiderers, which 58 girls attended straight away. Whitework and tambour embroidery (chain stitch) were taught. When farm incomes improved around 1865, at first fewer girls turned to the poorly paid craft.

In the Speidel household, embroidery remained a focus. Pauline Speidel built it into a business and employed around 160 embroiderers in 1888; the finished goods were delivered to Stuttgart every week. After the First World War, the craft experienced a new upswing.

At the end of the 19th century, a dedicated embroidery school was also founded, where drawing and embroidery were taught systematically. Even the royal houses of Württemberg and England bought Wolfschlugen embroideries. The exhibition in the town hall shows embroideries, embroidery patterns, stamps, an old sewing machine and other items from this era.
