Wasserwelten – Von Dix bis Mollweide

The show takes visitors to waters around Lake Constance, to the North Sea, to Mediterranean coasts and European lakes, depicted among others by Otto Dix and Werner Mollweide.

About the museum

The origins go back to 1930: on the occasion of a visit by the Lake Constance History Association, two master craftsmen put together the exhibition “Alt-Stockach” (Old Stockach), which became the foundation of the town's historical collection. The local history museum that grew out of it was on view for over 40 years in the historic department store until the building was demolished in 1972. In 1983 the collection found a room in the Adler Post.

In the 1990s the local history museum was to become a town museum with its own site. After the state forestry office was dissolved, the town bought its building, a half-timbered structure from the 18th century at the crossroads of Haupt- and Salmannsweilerstraße, and expanded it into a cultural center. In 2002/2003 the museum, library and other facilities opened there.

Important milestones were the takeover of the estate of the Sohn family of terracotta makers from Zizenhausen in 2003 and, in 2016, the Heinrich Wagner art collection, lent for 30 years. Exhibitions on Chagall, Miró and Dalí made the museum known beyond the region. Today it holds more than 3,000 objects, including what the museum says is the world's largest collection of Zizenhausen terracottas; the building is being expanded and is to house a permanent exhibition on town history again.
