About the museum

The MAC was created by the Singen-based philanthropist couple Hermann Maier and Gabriela Unbehaun-Maier. Its foundation is the Südwestdeutsche Kunststiftung, established in 1993 at the suggestion of then-mayor Friedhelm Möhrle, whose holdings now comprise several thousand works, mainly by artists from southwestern Germany. The town of Singen provided the site on Parkstraße.

The first building, MAC 1, opened in November 2013. Architect Daniel Binder from Gottmadingen designed a curving, earth-colored building that echoes the forms of the fortress ruins on the Hohentwiel. In 2019, MAC 2 followed, roughly three times the size and by the same architect, funded by the specially established Gabriela und Hermann Maier Stiftung – an angular building reminiscent of fallen boulders, with seven exhibition rooms on four levels around an 18-meter-high light hall.

On a combined area of about 4,000 square meters, the museum brings together painting, photography, and video and light art with rare vehicles. The exhibitions change regularly and set automobiles, from prewar coachbuilt cars to modern supercars, in dialogue with paintings, fashion, and design. There are also longer-running presentations, for example on luxury coachwork of the 1920s and 1930s or on the car paintings of Pop artist James Francis Gill.
