About the museum

The Kunstmuseum Singen is rooted in an exhibition tradition that began in 1947 with the first "Singener Kunstausstellung" (Singen Art Exhibition). Over the following decades, the town commissioned works from artists and built up its own art collection. In the 1980s, the town council decided to put these holdings on public display in a municipal art museum, which opened in Singen's city center in 1990.

After modernization and expansion, the museum reopened in 2014. With around 1,000 square meters of visitor and exhibition space on two levels, it is one of the larger municipal art museums on the German side of Lake Constance.

The collection comprises some 5,000 paintings, prints and drawings, photographs, and sculptures. At its core are the artists of the Höri, who lived on this Lake Constance peninsula from 1933 onward, including Otto Dix, Erich Heckel, and Max Ackermann. Further focal points are landscape painting of the Hegau and Lake Constance since 1900, post-1945 art from southwestern Germany, and contemporary art from the four-country Lake Constance region. The holdings are shown in changing thematic and solo exhibitions. The museum also looks after the town's public art, which includes works ranging from Otto Dix to Ilya Kabakov.
