About the museum

The foundation was laid by the Singen pharmacist Albert Funk, who from 1925 carried out archaeological excavations in the town and the surrounding area, documenting and collecting the finds. In 1951 his collection was opened to the public in the Singen palace; since then the museum has been an institution of the town of Singen and, thanks to allocations from the state of Baden-Württemberg, has grown into one of the major displays of prehistory and early history in southwestern Germany.

The palace, also known as the Oberes Schloss or Enzenberg'sches Schloss, stands on the site of a 16th-century administrative building. Rebuilt after destruction in the Thirty Years' War, the present three-story building with a mansard roof was commissioned by Count Franz Joseph von Enzenberg from 1807. It includes a carriage house and an English-style palace garden with a Japanese tea pavilion.

In eleven rooms on the second floor, the exhibition leads from the Paleolithic hunters of the Petersfels cave through the first farmers and the Early Bronze Age “Singen Group” to the Celts, Romans, Alemanni and the castles of the Hegau. Hands-on and dress-up stations bring the eras to life. The museum also manages collections on town history, geology and insects. In 2026 the museum celebrated its 75th anniversary with a special program.
