About the museum
The Gänsturm was built around 1320 as the lower gate of the Weikersheim town wall. Towards the end of World War II it was severely damaged and remained a ruin for a long time, until it was restored in 2003 thanks to civic engagement, with its baroque onion dome. Since then the tower has housed the town museum; in 2006 it was expanded to include the neighboring Haus Dunkel, which had been extensively renovated.
Under the motto “Gegenwart aus der Vergangenheit” (The Present from the Past), the museum offers insights into the history of the small residence town, from its first settlements to the present day. Furniture and art from the early 20th century document middle-class domestic culture, town crafts are documented, and there is a lapidarium in the inner courtyard.
A special draw is the view from the tower roof over the old town, to the vineyards and into the Tauber valley; visitors who are not afraid of heights can enjoy it on a guided tour.
