About the museum
Since 1958 the city museum has been housed in the Old Town Hall of 1470 and the adjoining Salt House of 1592 in the historic old town. From modest beginnings, a house of about 450 square meters grew, with a town-history and folklore tour; the permanent exhibition in its basic outline dates from 1977.
The tour begins in prehistory with Ice Age animal remains and Stone Age tools, and continues through finds from the Roman and Alemannic periods – the Alemannic grave goods are particularly high quality – to a medieval farm. The second floor tells the story of the Stift (collegiate foundation) and the town, with a detailed town model from about 1830 and a wood-paneled farmhouse parlor with hand-painted stove tiles.
The third floor shows old crafts and trades, plus a separate section on weaving, which played an outstanding role in Sindelfingen in the 18th and 19th centuries. For the town's 2013 anniversary, a section on the 20th and 21st centuries was added in the top floor.
