About the museum

SCHAUWERK Sindelfingen is a private collector's museum that opened on June 11, 2010. It is run by THE SCHAUFLER FOUNDATION, which the entrepreneur Peter Schaufler founded in 2005. The location came from the company's history: when the refrigeration technology manufacturer BITZER moved its production from Sindelfingen to Rottenburg in 2003, large halls at the original plant became vacant.

The Stuttgart firm BFK Architekten converted the site in 2008/09 without blurring its industrial history. The steel frame of the shed hall was preserved, its roof received new glazing and lets in even north light; the former high-bay warehouse, more than 15 meters high, can be explored via a surrounding ramp. A new building with five white half-floors complements the older buildings. In 2022, another building was added on the neighboring plot with a depot, restoration workshop, creative studios, café, and a visitor underground garage.

The basis of the exhibitions is the collection of Peter Schaufler (1940–2015) and Christiane Schaufler-Münch (1934–2025), now comprising more than 3,700 works. It began with works of the ZERO movement and its precursors such as Lucio Fontana; painting, sculpture, installation, and photography were added, for example by Georg Baselitz, Anselm Kiefer, Katharina Grosse, Anish Kapoor, Andreas Gursky, or Dan Flavin. The museum shows the collection in changing presentations and complements it with monographic exhibitions with international loans.
