The Haus der Donauschwaben was inaugurated in Sindelfingen in November 1970 and is the oldest of the Danube Swabian institutions in the state substantially funded by Baden-Württemberg. It is run by an association whose members include the state, the town of Sindelfingen and the four Danube Swabian regional associations. For decades it served as the central meeting point for Danube Swabians from Europe and overseas.
Besides event rooms, an archive and a specialist library, the house contains a museum. Using panels, photos and objects, it tells the story from emigration to the Danube region, through settlement areas, economy, church and everyday life, to flight and expulsion after 1945. A gallery of around 190 paintings by Danube Swabian artists, a frieze by Josef de Ponte in the entrance hall, a stained-glass window depicting a Danube Swabian wedding, as well as costumes and household goods complete the presentation.
After a comprehensive renovation, which the state and the town supported with considerable funds, the house reopened on 1 March 2024. With its new focus on content, it aims to appeal more strongly to a broad public; a memorial to the victims of war and expulsion was also created in the courtyard of honour.
