About the museum
The Städtische Galerie Traunstein is a venue for exhibitions and cultural events in the Kulturforum Klosterkirche. The town has restored and modernized the listed ensemble of the former Capuchin monastery. The gallery occupies the renovated "Portenstock", the former residential wing of the monastic community.
The house holds the town's art collection of around 3,000 objects. It includes paintings from the 17th century to the present, the estate of the woodcut artist Ernst von Dombrowski, and drawings and sketchbooks by regional artists and art teachers, including Georg Huber and Günther Schuhböck. It also includes prints and private press prints by Wilhelm Neufeld and paper works by Heinrich Stichter.
The annual program combines exhibitions of contemporary art with changing, thematically arranged presentations from the gallery's own holdings. The gallery sees itself as a mediator: walks, guided tours and artist talks aim to reduce people's reservations about art, and the house is explicitly a place of learning for school classes of all types. Images, sculptures, installations, videos and photographs are understood as mirrors of social developments, and they are used in lessons not only for art but also for subjects such as German, religion, ethics or history.
