Steinerner Geschichtsgarten der Stadt Horb am Neckar
Freely accessible open-air museum above Horb with more than 70 historical boundary, legal and road markers from the region.
About the museum
The Steinerner Geschichtsgarten (“stone history garden”) was laid out in 1979 to preserve historical boundary stones and memorial stones from Horb and the surrounding area that had been removed from their original locations during road construction, land consolidation or building work. Since then the collection has grown steadily through deliberate acquisitions and chance finds. For example, a state boundary stone from 1837 was added that had been recovered during construction of the Stuttgart–Singen autobahn, while another comes from the widening of the road to Betra.
The site lies on the Kreuzkapellenberg above the cemetery on Kreuzerstraße, right on the Way of St. James, and offers a view over Horb and the Neckar valley. It is maintained by the Kleindenkmalfreunde Horb und Umgebung within the Gesellschaft zur Erhaltung und Erforschung der Kleindenkmale in Baden-Württemberg (society for the preservation and study of small monuments).
The collection now comprises more than 70 survey, legal and road markers. Many of them once marked the convoluted border between Württemberg and the Hohenzollern lands around Horb; others commemorate accidents, wars or executions. An information board explains the concept, and the town of Horb provides a detailed description of the individual stones with a site plan.
