Steinzeitdorf Kussow

Open-air museum with reconstructed Neolithic houses and Mesolithic huts – for touching, weaving, pottery, and archery.

Opening hoursAdmission from €4

About the museum

The Steinzeitdorf (Stone Age village) was created on a former agricultural site in Kussow, a district of Damshagen not far from the road from Grevesmühlen to Klütz and Boltenhagen. After long preparations and a great deal of volunteer work, it opened on September 5, 1998. The open-air museum is run by the Verein Steinzeitdorf Kussow, which maintains it with donations and the support of regional sponsors.

The village aims to illustrate the transition from the Mesolithic to the Neolithic. Above a watering place stand reconstructed huts of a Mesolithic campsite, such as hunters and gatherers used after the end of the last Ice Age. The house models of the first farmers are based on excavation findings from the early Funnel Beaker culture in the first half of the 4th millennium BC – the people who also built the megalithic tombs of the region.

The grounds include a small herb garden, a field with very old grain varieties, and enclosures with old domestic animal breeds such as pigs and sheep. Replica tools, clothing, and vessels may be handled, and at hands-on stations you can try weaving, pottery, and archery. Many school classes use the village as an outdoor classroom.
