About the museum
The Oberrheinisches Tabakmuseum Mahlberg opened in 1992 and grew out of a private citizens' initiative. It is housed in a former cigar factory at the southern entrance to the town and is devoted to tobacco growing and processing, which shaped farming and trade on the Upper Rhine for more than 200 years. By its own account, it is one of the largest tobacco museums in Europe.
The exhibition spans four floors and a tobacco drying loft, with more than 1,500 square meters and over 5,000 exhibits. It tells the story of tobacco's discovery and its route to Europe, shows tobacco from around the world, raw-material packaging, a humidifying room, and manual and machine processing, including home work. A collection of pipes and snuff boxes rounds off the tour.
Background: smoking reached the Upper Rhine during the Thirty Years' War with passing soldiers. In 1774 Carl Ludwig Lotzbeck founded a snuff factory in Lahr, which laid the foundation for growing and processing in the region; around 1900 there were more than 300 factories on the Upper Rhine, with well-known names such as Roth-Händle and Burger Stumpen. Museum education projects on tobacco for schools complete the offering.
