About the museum

The Historische Mühle Glatz lies on the Schutter River in Seelbach, on the western edge of the Black Forest. A charter from 1746 already mentions it, although individual components point to a considerably older origin. Commercial use of the oil and grain mill ended in 1945; the sawmill and press house operated until 1995. The stamping mill and hemp-fiber processing have been out of use for some time.

The trademarks are the two undershot waterwheels. The larger one, 5.5 meters in diameter, also drives a small modern hydroelectric plant. In 1987 a flood severely damaged the complex. The subsequent renovation succeeded with support from the State Heritage Office, the Ortenau district, the municipality, and local associations, and in 1992 it was awarded a prize for exemplary renovation.

The complete mill machinery has been preserved: a grain mill from around 1750, a barley stamping mill from around 1800, an oil mill from 1848 with an edge-runner mill and wedge press, and a sawmill with frame saws from 1851 and 1911. The ensemble also includes an outbuilding with a schnapps distillery, a bread oven and a medieval deep well, as well as a press house from the mid-20th century.

The private museum is located in the basement; the operators, the Glatz family, live on the top floor. Experts count the complex among the most extensive historic mill installations at their original site in Germany.
