About the museum

Locomotive servicing facilities existed in Staßfurt as early as 1857; the present depot was built between 1899 and 1902 on the land of the neighboring Anhalt town of Leopoldshall and was designated a Bahnbetriebswerk (locomotive depot) from 1921. From 1969 it was merely an outstation of the Güsten depot. In the 1980s, Staßfurt became known among railway enthusiasts because heavy steam locomotives of classes 41, 44, and 50.35 were still in regular service here, and photographers were allowed onto the grounds unusually freely.

Because the facilities had been preserved largely in their original condition, the Reichsbahn directorate in Magdeburg designated Staßfurt a heritage depot (Traditions-Bw) in the late 1980s; the first museum locomotives arrived in 1987/88, followed shortly afterward by the first steam locomotive festival. After German reunification, the association Eisenbahnfreunde Traditionsbahnbetriebswerk Staßfurt was founded on October 30, 1990; after the outstation closed in 1992, it bought the site in 1994.

Today the volunteer members maintain a large collection of vehicles, with steam locomotives such as 01 005, 41 1231, 44 1182, 44 1486, and 50 3695, numerous diesel locomotives, the electric locomotive E 04 07, fireless steam locomotives, and a steam rotary snowplow. With its “Salzland-Express” train, the association runs special excursions; the highlights of the year are the locomotive festivals in spring and fall.
