About the museum

The Rollbockbahn was a meter-gauge industrial railway between the Lower Reichenbach station and Oberheinsdorf. It opened on December 15, 1902, and served mainly the factories in the Heinsdorfer Grund. Standard-gauge freight wagons were carried on Rollböcke (rolling bogies), which gave the line its name. From 1909, passenger trains also ran. Passenger service ended in 1957, and the line was closed in 1962.

The Maschinenfabrik in Chemnitz had built three special Fairlie-type double-bogie steam locomotives for the tight curves, clad to look like tram locomotives. One of them survived. In 1997, a heritage association was founded in Heinsdorfergrund to preserve the last remains of the railway and to set up a small museum at the former terminus.

In 1999 the surviving locomotive returned to its home as a long-term loan from Dresden and has since stood in a newly built locomotive shed in Oberheinsdorf. An original passenger car, rediscovered later in Saxony-Anhalt, was brought back, restored and has been part of the display since 2006. The collection also includes a rolling bogie, a track-measuring car and a freight car. At events, model railway layouts are shown, and weddings take place in the restored passenger car.
