About the museum
The Stadtmuseum Lengenfeld was set up in June 1955 by the two teachers Curt Gerber and Hermann Gerisch. Gerber was known as a local researcher and traced the house's successive owners back to the late 17th century.
The collection is housed in the former residential and business building of a cloth maker and dyer, built around 1682, which is one of the oldest surviving buildings in the town. Groin vaults, a plank room, Umgebinde (timber-and-stone framing), half-timbering with scratched-plaster ornaments, an arcade walkway and a Black Kitchen characterize the building; a two-story extension with the Black Kitchen was probably added around 1800. The house itself is therefore one of the most valuable exhibits.
Across three floors, more than a dozen rooms are arranged as museum displays. The focus is the town's history, from its settlement through medieval beekeeping (Zeidlerei) and the cloth-making trade to school history, crafts, industry, trade and transport. A focus of the local history collection is the textile trade, which long shaped the town; a comprehensive printing workshop is also on view.
