About the museum
Old firefighting equipment that was no longer needed in Lengenfeld first found room in a shed and later in a former wool store. From 1983 part of the collection was shown there to interested visitors. After German reunification the fire brigade was given the entire hall; on June 12, 1992 it was handed over as the new fire station, and the museum was set up in the former fire station.
The fire museum opened on May 22, 1993. The Förderverein Feuerwehrmuseum Lengenfeld has run it ever since. Over time, donations and loans from other fire brigades, museums and private individuals were added. The museum now occupies two former fire stations from 1932 and 1992 with a total of around 1,000 square meters of space, plus an outdoor area.
The exhibition shows the development of firefighting technology over the last three centuries: hand squirts, hand-operated pumps, helmets, uniforms, trailers and vehicles. It also covers fire brigade music, breathing protection and air-raid protection, as well as the history of the Vogtland district fire brigade association and long-disbanded brigades.
