About the museum

The mill goes back to a fulling mill built in 1615 on older foundations; a tenant named Tüshaus operated it for the lords of Schloss Lembeck. In 1752 it was raised and given a second millwheel, after which it also served as an oil mill. In 1890 Heinrich Tüshaus bought the property, extended the attic and added a grain mill with two grinding stones; the water wheel gave way to a powerful turbine. In 1908 a generator was added, supplying power to the mill, the miller's house and the yard.

The oil mill was modernized in 1914 and shut down in 1948; in 1970 grinding operations ended with the retirement of the last miller. In the 1980s the mill was restored with funds from the city of Dorsten and the state, and in 1986 it was recognized as a technical monument. Museum operations began in 1987.

Since 2013 the Francis turbine, converted to alternating current, has again supplied electricity to the mill as a micro hydropower plant. Since 2011 a group led by Thomas Gerling has looked after the tours; in 2014 a friends' association was founded, which also organizes the annual mill festival on Whit Monday and promotes the mill as a learning venue outside school.
