About the museum
The Museum am Schloss is run by the Heimatverein Raesfeld (local heritage association), which has been active since 1949. It is located in Freiheit, directly by Raesfeld Castle.
At its heart is the permanent exhibition "Raesfeld 1939 bis 1945". It sheds light on the life of the village population during the Second World War, beyond the big politics: everyday life, the residents' experiences and the consequences of the war in this small village in the Westmünsterland. Photographs, documents, explanatory texts and numerous original objects bring this period to life.
The exhibition is based on the contemporary history collection that the association has built up over decades and which, according to the association, is unique in this form in Westphalia. In 2025 the museum recorded more than 5,000 visitors.
