About the museum
In 1998 the remains of a larger Bronze Age settlement were excavated at the western edge of Dietfurt, including the ground plan of a longhouse dated to the Middle Bronze Age, around 1600 BC. The name ALCMONA goes back to the Celtic name of the Altmühl river ("still water").
In 2000 the friends' association ALCMONA was founded with the aim of reconstructing the building. The longhouse was built entirely with association funds and measures about 8 by 16 meters, with a ridge height of 5 to 7 meters. It was built with handmade wooden pegs and without iron; the walls are woven willow with a clay-and-straw render, and the roof is made of wooden shingles.
Besides the house, the site includes a reconstructed clay oven and further facilities, such as a lock house, jetty, work area, herb garden, stables, a pit house, a storage building and an archery range. Today the association offers guided tours, craft and herb courses, children's birthday parties and events. Original finds from the region are shown by the museum in the Hollerhaus in Dietfurt.
