About the museum

The Wagnerei Zacherl property near the Goggerturm in the old town of Dietfurt an der Altmühl has been preserved. The father and grandfather of today’s owner practiced the wheelwright’s trade there for many years. The house dates from the 19th century. Part of the property was an old tower of the town wall, which was removed down to the ground floor and built over with a barn. From 2009 to 2011 the complex was extensively renovated and has since housed the museum.

The Wagner, called Stellmacher in the north, was once the all-round woodworker of the village. His main work was building and repairing carts and wagons; he also made handles, rakes, ladders, wheelbarrows and sleds. The trade declined sharply after World War II, with rubber-tired wheels and carts.

The workshop on the first floor is preserved in its 1920/1930 condition. Band saw, planing machine and wheel-making machine with belt drive are fully functional. As a “living museum,” the workshop is still used for repairs and replicas. The exhibition rooms on the second floor show the living and working world of a craftsman’s family about a hundred years ago.
