About the museum
The Walderlebniszentrum Tennenlohe is the oldest of the Bavarian forest experience centers. It began as a forest museum, later became a forest information center, and today is a forest education facility of the Bavarian forestry administration, based at the Amt für Ernährung, Landwirtschaft und Forsten Fürth-Uffenheim (Office for Food, Agriculture and Forestry). Its aim is to bring forests and forestry closer to all population groups, especially in the urban setting of the Nürnberg–Fürth–Erlangen metropolitan region.
The grounds contain several theme houses built in log construction. The Peter-Stromer-Haus tells the story of the Nürnberger Reichswald and the world's first artificially established forests planted there; other houses are devoted to the animals of the forest and forest biology. A forest history trail shows original tools from past forest use, for example for resin and litter gathering, through to modern forestry.
In the outdoor area, the nature experience trail with twelve stations invites visitors to try things out, for example a long-jump comparison with a fox or balance exercises; there is also a forest labyrinth and a barefoot trail. The offerings are aimed at school classes, children's groups, families and adults; guided tours are possible for groups of six or more. Following storms in July 2026, the barefoot trail is closed until further notice.
