About the museum
The summer beer cellars came about because the electoral brewing ban from Georgi to Michaeli (April 23 to September 29) made cool storage necessary for beer brewed in winter. The south bank of the Inn, opposite the old town, offered ideal geological conditions. The cellars were built on Kellerstraße from 1785 into the first half of the 19th century.
Kellerstraße, with beer served fresh from the cellars, became a popular meeting place across the state into the 20th century. The cellars continued in use, sometimes for other purposes, until the Bruck-Bräu brewery ceased operations in 1977 and the last Wasserburg brewery, Fletzinger-Bräu, closed in 1994.
Since 1995, Witgar Neumaier senior has surveyed the cellar system and collected documents on its history. Together with a group of handy "Kellerfreunde" (cellar friends), he developed the cellars into a museum on a volunteer basis. Today a tour leads through the labyrinth of seven former summer beer cellars, introduced by a multimedia presentation.
