About the museum
The foundations for the museum were laid by two patrons from Weiler: Mayor Fridolin Holzer and tobacco manufacturer Ignaz Dornach, who founded the Westallgäuer Heimatverein (West Allgäu local heritage association). In May 1924 the first museum opened in rooms of the Weiler town hall. Dornach bequeathed his collection to the association; he had explicitly intended it to be dedicated to the homeland.
In 1954 the market municipality acquired the former inn "Zum Löwen", which the Heimatverein set up as a museum. The house is more than 300 years old and extends over four floors. The visit begins in the large tavern room with its tiled stove.
On display are living spaces from the Gothic period to modern times, such as kitchen, living room, bedroom and children's room, as well as a collection of cupboards from different stylistic periods, the rebuilt general store of the Grüßer family from the 18th century, reverse-glass paintings from around the world, sewing machines and other machines from the local hat manufacturing, and large Christian sculptures in the former dance hall. In 1999 the Heimatverein received the Magnusstab (Magnus staff) of the Heimatbund Allgäu for its work.
