Anniversary exhibition of the Kunstverein Friedberg (Friedberg art association) in the new special exhibition rooms, with contemporary art from five decades of the association's history.
Photographs and personal objects show where Jewish life is visible in the region today; back on view since November 2023.
About the museum
The museum grew out of a citizens' collection: in 1896, the newly founded Friedberger Geschichtsverein (Friedberg history society), inspired in part by Roman excavations in the town, began systematically collecting finds, documents and everyday objects. Since 1901, the institution has seen itself as a history museum for the town and the Wetterau region. In 1921, the Wetterauer Museumsgesellschaft was founded as a friends' association, and in 1936 the collections passed into the ownership of the town of Friedberg.
The building on Haagstraße next to the Stadtkirche (town church) now houses permanent exhibitions on two floors. One focus is the archaeology of the Wetterau from the Stone Age to the early Middle Ages. As the Limes information center for the central Wetterau, the Roman section tells of the occupation of the region, the Friedberg fort and life on the Limes; exhibits include a hoard of more than 1,100 silver coins from Ober-Florstadt and the Friedberg Mithraeum discovered in 1894.
The upper floor features highlights from the history of the castle and town, a re-created general store selling colonial goods, and a section on Elvis Presley, who was stationed in Friedberg as a soldier from 1958 to 1960. Since 2001, stone monuments have been kept in a visible storage facility in the Rathauspark. In 2026, the rooms of the former agricultural section on the first floor were converted into new special exhibition spaces. The museum also runs guided tours of the medieval mikveh.
