About the museum
The Museum Echzell was established in 1987 at the suggestion of the Heimat- und Geschichtsverein (local history association), which had been founded five years earlier in the context of the town's 1200th anniversary celebrations. The occasion for the celebrations was Echzell's first documented mention in 782, when Charlemagne gave the monastery of Fulda property in the Wetterau. The municipality acquired a Baroque tithe barn on the grounds of a former manor house, had it restored and made it available to the association for its collection. The half-timbered building stands near the Echzell Latin School and the remains of the Roman fort bathhouse.
The core of the permanent display consists of archaeological finds from the Echzell area, from the Stone Age through the Bronze and Iron Ages to the early Middle Ages, including stone tools, vessels, jewelry and coins. A separate section serves as the local Limes information center: finds and panels tell of daily life for soldiers and civilian residents at the large fort on the Upper German Limes, arranged by fort site, camp village, baths and cemetery. There is also a collection of Roman coins with explanations of their purchasing power and special features.
The younger local history runs from the first mention, shown as a photo reproduction, to modern times: on display are the pharmacy, privileged since 1770, equipment for grain harvesting and flax processing, a saddlery, and themes on church and school, including the former Latin school. In front of the house a replica of a Jupiter column has stood since 2002; original parts are shown in a museum room opened in 2007.
