About the museum
The gatehouse was built in 1670 in the Dutch baroque style as the entrance building of Dölitz Castle and is the oldest surviving structure in the village. The castle itself was bought by the city of Leipzig in 1927, heavily damaged in World War II and blown up in 1947; the gatehouse was preserved.
In 1960 a permanent tin figure exhibition opened there. Since July 2014 the association Jahrfeier Völkerschlacht bei Leipzig 1813 e.V. has run the house together with the Zinnfigurenfreunde Leipzig; it receives funding from the city's cultural office.
On three floors the museum shows single figures and dioramas from antiquity through the Middle Ages to the Rococo. The emphasis is on the Napoleonic era: the large diorama, about 25 square meters, depicts the fighting on the southern battlefield on October 18, 1813. Newly designed rooms tell the story of Leipzig and of the village of Dölitz, and another room explains the making and history of the tin figure.
