About the museum
Some gold jewellery that a villager gave to a doctor led, in 1961, to the discovery of the fourth-largest Minoan palace on Crete and the ancient town around it. From 1900 to 1450 BC the palace was an important centre of administration, religion and trade.
The complex extended over about 8,000 m² and contained numerous rooms. It was built at the exit of the imposing Gorge of the Dead, where the necropolis is also located. Today the palace of Zakros is a World Heritage monument and was inscribed on the UNESCO list in 2025.
