About the museum
Next to the sandy beach of Chiona lies a Minoan settlement that flourished in the period 1550–1220 BC and was divided into nine quarters. Its ancient name remains unknown.
The luxurious houses with imposing façades and megalithic walls show the importance of the town. An olive press, a sanctuary of Dictaean Zeus and tombs have also been uncovered, which helped anthropologists draw valuable conclusions about the physical build of the Minoans.
