About the museum
Two kilometres from Siteia lies the archaeological site of Petras, which has not yet revealed all its secrets, as excavations have continued since 1985. They have brought to light a Minoan palace and the surrounding settlement.
The palace was built on a low hill, at whose foot the waters of the Aegean once reached, around 1900–1800 BC. It covered 2,500 m² and had at least two floors, and it marks the heyday of an area that had been inhabited from 3400 BC until 1450 BC. The importance of the town is shown by the Cyclopean wall with three square towers that surrounded it, a construction rare on Crete. In the area there is also an unlooted Minoan cemetery of the elite families of the palace settlement.
