About the museum

The acropolis on the hill of Agios Andreas, at the top of Kamalafka, is the only organised archaeological site on Sifnos and has been open to visitors since 2010. Its development and presentation were funded by the Ministry of Culture and the European Regional Development Fund in 2002–2008. In 2010 the site received a Europa Nostra award from the European Commission for its exemplary presentation.

Human presence on the hill is documented from the end of the 4th millennium BC. The strongly fortified acropolis was founded in the Mycenaean period, around the end of the 13th or the beginning of the 12th century BC, and was inhabited until the mid-11th century BC. After an abandonment of about three centuries, the site was resettled in the 8th century BC and flourished at least until the end of the 6th century BC. The sanctuary founded in the 8th century BC remained in use into the Hellenistic period. The ancient name of the acropolis has not been identified.

The site features the Cyclopean wall with its towers and bastions, the ditch, the roads and the ruins of many buildings, among them the sanctuary with its monumental archaic enclosure. Excavations began in 1898 and have continued since 1997 under the auspices of the Archaeological Society at Athens. At the entrance, an exhibition area with explanatory material and digital applications operates, where finds from the excavations are also displayed.
