About the museum
The Archaeological Museum of Sifnos is located in Kastro, in the heart of the medieval settlement, which is built on the ruins of the ancient city of Sifnos. The traditional building, on the upper floor of the house of G. Maridakis, belongs to the medieval core of Kastro. It was donated by the Maridakis family; the Ministry of Culture restored it in the early 1980s, and the museum has operated normally since 1986. An extension into adjoining expropriated properties is planned, so that the long history of ancient Sifnos and of Kastro can be presented.
The collections include sculptures (grave monuments, statues, architectural members) from the Archaic to the Roman period, clay objects, figurines and vessels from the excavations at Kastro, from the Geometric to the Hellenistic period, as well as metal objects and coins. The exhibits give an impression of the life of the inhabitants and of the sculptural decoration of the ancient city, whose public buildings, according to Herodotus, had been adorned with works from Paros.
The most important exhibits are the marble head of a kouros or sphinx from the mid-6th century BC, a marble Ionic capital, a statue of Artemis from the Hellenistic period and a marble grave stele. Sifnos became rich in the 6th and 5th centuries BC thanks to its gold and silver mines. From time to time the museum hosts educational programmes and special guided tours.
