About the museum
The Laografiko Mouseio Siphnou belongs to the Association of Siphnians, founded in 1895, and is housed in a building on Plateia Iroon in the centre of Apollonia. Construction began in 1953 and was initially completed in 1964, to designs by civil engineer Anargyros Konstantopoulos. In 1983 the building was extended to designs by the architect Panagiotis Sarlis. The museum opened to the public in 1974 and was inspired and organised by the Siphnian teacher, writer and ethnologist Antonis Troullos.
The exhibitions are housed in two rooms, the original and its extension, while the office, the library and the corridor between them complete the space. On display are collections of swords and weapons, old traditional costumes, woodcarvings and chests, embroideries and lace, household utensils, including cutlery from Constantinople, farm tools, basketry, beekeeping equipment and ceramics.
The rooms also contain corners devoted to the Siphnian warrior, the housewife, the farmer, the tailor and the photographer, a representative room of a Siphnian house, portraits of prominent Siphnians, historical newspaper archives and books by Siphnian writers.
