About the museum
The archaeological finds of Eresos began to be collected in the Ottoman period and were kept until the early 1960s in the basement of the Agricultural School. They were then moved to a newly built building next to the archaeological site of the Basilica of Agios Andreas, which housed the exhibition until 2000, when safety reasons forced its closure. Since 2011 the collection has been displayed in the former primary school of Eresos, a stone-built building that once also housed a folklore museum and was transferred to the Ministry of Culture.
The exhibition follows three thematic sections: religion and worship (with a rare statuette of Cybele), burial customs (with a clay larnax, a coffin) and everyday life, with vessels and objects of public and private life from the Late Helladic to the Early Christian period. In the semi-open area large architectural elements are displayed, such as capitals and fragments of friezes and cornices, while in the forecourt there are sarcophagi, bases, inscriptions and free-standing sculptures.
